New regulations set by the FMCSA now require entry-level drivers who obtained their CLP (commercial license permit) on or after February 7, 2022, to successfully complete "Entry Level Driver Training" (ELDT) before being permitted to take their (commercial driver’s license) CDL skills tests.

This training must be provided by a school or entity listed on the FMCSA

WHO IS CONSIDERED AN ENTRY-LEVEL DRIVER?

Any individual wanting to:

-Obtain a Class A CDL or Class B CDL for the first time.

-Upgrade an existing Class B CDL to a Class A CDL.

-Obtain a school bus (S), passenger (P), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement for the first time.

Theory

FMCSA requires theory training with a registered training provider. Theory and behind-the-wheel training must be completed before you can take your CDL Skills Test.

Behind-The-Wheel

In addition to the theory training, FMCSA also requires behind-the-wheel instruction with a registered training provider before you can take your CDL Skills Test.

Oregon

Oregon goes by what the FMCSA requires. There are no minimum hours of training required, but you must complete the theory & behind-the-wheel training set by the FMCSA.

Washington

In addition to the FMCSA requirements, Washington enforces a minimum of 160 training hours provided by a WA DOL approved school/employer.
