Your CDL Permit - Things You Should Know

Here are a few important things to know before/once you have your CDL Permit:

  • Once you receive your CDL permit you must wait 14 days before you can take the skills and road test. However, you can go ahead and schedule your test for a date that is at-least 14 days from the date you received your permit.

A CDL Permit is required for the following:

  1. Anyone wanting the obtain their CDL for the first time.

  2. Anyone upgrading their commercial license for the following reasons:

  • To obtain a higher class (example: From a Class B to a Class A)

  • Adding endorsements that require a skills test, such as: passenger, school bus, tank vehicle

  • Removing an air brake restriction

  • Removing a no manual transmission restriction

  • Removing a non tractor trailer restriction

Know when your permit expires.

  • Your CDL Permit is valid for 180 days (6 months) from the date it is issued, and can be renewed once without having to take the written exams again, as long as you renew it within 30 days of the expiration date.

  • If your permit expires before you pass all 3 parts of the Skills & Road test you will have to start all over. This will have to re-take the knowledge tests, wait 14 days to take the skills/road test, and pay all the fees again.

What can you do while waiting 14 days to take your CDL Skills & Road Test?
